Will For Self Improvement

Do you have the will for self improvement?  Here’s how this question came about.  The other day after presenting my motivational talk in a small town, I was having a nice chat with one of the audience members.  Somehow, the discussion came around to hockey since this sport is not only the biggest sport here in Canada, but is very popular in the small towns.  We got talking about how one of the professional hockey players from the Boston Bruins which is this past season’s Stanley Cup champions, is from the same small town I was speaking at.

This gentleman I was speaking with has seen hundreds of kids play hockey locally and he even noticed a few who were pretty good.  However, so far only one of them over the years have made it to the NHL which is the professional league in the sport of ice hockey in North America.  This is the goal of many of the kids who play ice hockey as an activity all over Canada.

The Difference Is In The Will For Success

What this gentleman and I concluded is that although there are some talented young hockey players out there, most of them don’t have that extra something to enable them to eventually become NHL players.  The Boston Bruin player who did make it had just that extra something over all of the other kids in that town.  He was willing to do just a little more training, more effort, more hours than anybody else.

He didn’t rely on just his natural talent.  The other decent hockey players who are just as talented are doing just that — relying on their natural ability without really going the extra distance.  The reason why this Boston Bruin made it is because he had the extra will for self improvement and success.  This will motivated him to do that much harder than anybody else.  This was the big difference and the reason why he made it to the NHL while his buddies in town did not.

Self Improvement Also Requires Will

Of course, most of us do not have the aspirations to play hockey in the NHL but if we want self improvement for ourselves in any area of life, we still require the will to do so.  I find that many people out there want to improve their lives in some way but are not really showing that they have the will to do what is necessary for success.

Vince Lombardi, a legendary football coach, even said that the difference between the real winners and those who are not is not at the level of talent (strength or knowledge) but at the level of will.  He claimed that it’s the lack of will that causes most people already with natural talents to be unsuccessful.

One of my earlier episodes of Motivational WebTV centred around Lombardi’s famous quote and this subject of will.  If you never saw it, see it at The Will For Achieving Success.

If you came short of success in something, ask yourself if you really had to will to succeed.  How bad did you want to success?  What were you willing to do to get that success?

If you are serious about self improvement and success, make sure that you have the will to achieve all the goals you want to achieve.  This will is the extra ingredient that separates those who do become successful and those who don’t.

Also, I hope I showed some example of will in my 3-part Personal Development Video Series.  Check it out if you haven’t yet.
