If No Commitment To Goals
So I know this one lady who is pushing thirty years of age and still does not have her driver license yet. Not that this is necessarily an awful thing but in her case, she does want to get it. Here’s the thing though – she has failed her driver’s exam SIX previous times.
Her main obstacle in passing her driving exam is parking the car. This would be her biggest challenge in driving a car as it would be for many people as well.
I’ve actually been in a car with her while she was driving as I sat in as the licensed passenger. Her basic road skills in operating a vehicle actually are not too bad – passable enough to get her a license in my opinion with the exception of course, parking.
Related to parking is backing out of a driveway especially if there are other cars already parked on the street. She doesn’t have a good sense of direction of the car in relation to how to steer the wheel yet.
Lack Of Commitment In Achieving Goals
So given all this, it makes perfect sense that she would need to get out there are keep working on her main weakness in driving which is parking. This is somebody who should obviously be out there in quiet streets and empty parking lots, parking the car.
The problem is that she does not spend any significant time out there working on her parking. Whenever I ask her how many hours did she spend during the last few weeks parking cars, the answer would usually be zero. Even during a recent long weekend when there was ample time to get out there and park cars for 30 minutes, she did not.
So obviously there is a serious lack of commitment in achieving goals like passing her driver license. Instead, she spent her free time doing all the fun things like socializing, partying, etc.
If she had any commitment to getting her license, she would have gotten out there several times per week, even if only 30 minutes at a time, to practise the skills she needs to work on in order to pass her exam. She would have put this as a high priority item in her agenda and schedule it in her calendar along with one of her licensed family members to sit in the car with her.
But nope, this commitment is not there and it is therefore quite predictable that as long as there is no commitment, there will be no driver license for her in the foreseeable future.
This example clearly illustrates a very important point in achieving goals in anything. If the commitment is not there, goals will not be achieved. Commitment sets one up to do whatever it takes in order to get success. If this is missing, there will be no success.
This is nothing that abstract as it is just plain logic. If you want to achieve something, especially something that you are currently not great at, you must have the commitment that helps you get motivated to work towards that goal.
More specifically, you must make a ‘fully committed decision’ in order to become successful. This is a concept that I spend a lot of time discussing in both my live motivational keynote presentations and my personal development book, The Life Champion In You.
