Learning New Skills For Personal Growth
In this new episode of Motivational WebTV, I’m going to prove that it’s never too late for personal growth by learning new skills no matter how old you are. I’m going to use myself here in perhaps a silly example.
I’m already in what you call my middle ages and I have never in my life done any gardening. Back in May, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at some vegetable gardening at home. Now I’m sure that many of you avid gardeners out there already know a lot about gardening but in my case, I didn’t know a thing about this area.
So I did some very basic research, bought some seeds, planters for my deck and some soil. I planted some seeds for beans, carrots, lettuce and cabbage during late May. I learned a bit about watering, the need for drainage and what I can expect in the next couple of weeks.
Vegetable Gardening As Part Of Personal Growth
So vegetable gardening for the very first time became a part of my personal growth this year. After about a week and a half, some little plants started to appear from the soil. They started to get bigger as the weeks went by.
However, not all of my plants survived since we had a big storm early on that flooded my planters and this was followed by a heat wave. This made me learn about putting my planters in the shade for parts of the day.
I also learned about transplanting some of my plants to thin the vegetable garden out a bit but some plants did not like being transplanted and did not survive. I also had these unidentified plants that grew up to a foot and a half tall. Then my neighbour told me that they were weeds. I couldn’t really understand this since I planted only four different seeds but a friend emailed me and told me that sometimes, weed seeds can be present in the soil that I bought. I didn’t know this.
As soon as I pulled out these weeds, the rest of my garden, especially the lettuce and cabbage, started to really grow well. I guess the weeds were really absorbing a lot of the nutrients from the soil (they did have a rather extensive root system).
First Harvest At July From Vegetable Garden
So now that we are in late July, I was finally able to do a first harvest. I got some beans (pictured above) and cabbage leaves. I think the carrots and lettuce will come later. As you can see in the video, I should the results of my harvest as well as some of the growth on the plants themselves.

Never Too Late To Learn New Skills
So my point in my vegetable gardening exercise is that it’s never too late to learn new skills. Whether it’s learning how to swim or use computers or speak a new language, these are all skills that you can still learn no matter how old you are as long as you are willing to learn. Learning new skills is a part of ongoing personal growth.
