Motivation Techniques Using Group Activities

One of the hardest challenges I see among many people striving for some level of fitness is getting themselves motivated enough to actually do something.  Some of these individuals find it difficult particularly when there is nobody else around to help them do any exercise.  As a result, procrastination sets in – see my video on beating procrastination.

Among the motivation techniques I would recommend for not only these particular folks but even for those who are already successful with their individual fitness programs, is to involve group activities. Not only would there be more motivation among a group of people doing some form of fitness activity or sport together, the social aspect of it is also good for the soul.

When you end up combining a group activity that happens to be fun as well, everyone looks forward to the next session whether it’s a group cycle, hike or sport like volleyball.  In my case, I’m already quite disciplined in terms of my own regular fitness schedule but I like to add in some type of group activity once a week or so just for fun and variety.

Group Fitness Activities Are Also Social And Fun

I decided to go and play some beach volleyball this past weekend.  During the summer, there are probably different social groups in your area offering beach volleyball and there was one just group not far from where I live.

The group I played with was fun and non-competitive but did provide a bit of fitness when going after the ball.  It’s actually been years since I played volleyball so I had to get use to not overpowering the ball again but from my observation, every player including myself, was far from playing at the Olympic level.

But who cares?  It was a good time for all and people got to do something healthy outdoors during a nice summer day even though there was a flash rain in between games.  The rain was actually well received since it did get a bit hot so the cool down was welcomed.

So adding group activities in your fitness schedule is certainly an effective way to get some good exercise as well as social time in your week.  It’s one of the best motivation techniques around since there is good motivation when in numbers.

Above and below are two photos from my recent beach volleyball session.
