College Speaker Suggestions
As a college speaker who has personally been through summer school during my days as a student in both high school and university, I have some suggestions for those who are bound for any summer courses this year. During high school, I took summer classes to accelerate through high school to finish a year early (although in hindsight, I probably should not have done this but that’s a topic for another post). During university, I had to take the odd summer course because my grades were not up to par during my first and second years.
Summer School Has An Opportunity
I can certainly feel for those who are going to summer school for whatever reasons. It’s no fun when most of your friends are out vacationing or just doing other fun activities all summer while you have to attend classes. I get that since I’ve been through it.
However, there are some advantages of summer school that you should take if you are going to attend classes anyway. Here they are in no particular order.
Better Focus At Summer School
Since there are fewer courses during summer semesters, you will likely be taking only one or two different courses at the most rather than a full course load. So you can have more focus on just those courses which will help you improve your grades.
If your study skills have been less than optimal, I would suggest that you check out my college speaker article and video on study skills. Then start using the suggestions on that article this summer so you can build a good base for next year.
Better Teachers And Professors
In general, at least in my experience, the high school teachers and college professors who teach during the summer tend to be very good and above average. These are folks who really like to teach and do care for their students. They might even be close (but not quite) to the level of entertaining college speakers! As a result, the class experience will probably be better with these teachers.
Opportunity To Interact With New Students
This is something that is often underestimated. Many of the students who take summer school will be from other schools or years. They will often not be the same crowd that you see during the regular school year so this is an opportunity to interact with new students. Most people do not appreciate this fact but interacting with new people helps you build your social skills which in my opinion, is at least as important as the courses you are taking. Do take advantage of this opportunity.
