A Big Problem!

However, there is a BIG PROBLEM!  As you can appreciate, our standard educational systems do NOT teach us about communication skills.  None of us were taught adequately on communication skills at school especially if we wanted to become leaders some day.

This is true from primary school all the way through college and university levels.  The standard education systems do a great job training us on technical skills but interpersonal communication skills are severely lacking especially these days given the technology focused life that many of us have.

As a society, we’ve become more tech savvy at the expense of developing good interpersonal communication skills.

My Own Career

I graduated with a MBA which I thought was an automatic entry into a management position.  I was so wrong!  Although I was having a successful career in pharmaceutical sales, I wanted to be promoted into a management position. 

It took me many years plus additional professional training before I even acquired the proper leadership communication skills to become a manager.  I eventually did make it into management working in corporate executive positions as a product marketing manager, training manager and national sales manager but it took me a long time to get there. 

I also noticed that many of my colleagues who were at the top in terms of technical skills, never did make it into leadership roles. 

This all taught me that for leadership positions, technical skills alone are NOT enough!  Just continuing further training for technical skills will not develop one for leadership roles.  Technical training just prepares you for more technical roles, not leadership.

In order to become a true leader, one MUST have the leadership communication skills.

Main Areas Of Leadership Communication Skills

Leadership communication skills can be divided into three main areas; group presentation skills, 1 on 1 conversations and giving effective feedback.  Let’s briefly look at each area.

Group Presentation Skills

This set of skills is almost a given.  When you think about it, all great leaders have great group presentation skills.  They are all really good when presenting in front of audiences no matter what size.

1 On 1 Conversations

This area can be a bit of a surprise to many people but it turns out that leaders do speak to others, even on a 1 on 1 basis, quite differently compared to most people.  This is an important area of communications that even Toastmasters does not address.

Giving Effective Feedback

As a leader, you are often in a position to give feedback to others whether they are staff members, employees, team players, students or even friends and family.  There are effective ways of giving feedback as well as terrible ways.  Good leaders have learned how to give feedback in ways that motivate people rather than demoralize them.

So How Do You Learn Leadership Communication Skills?

There are two ways you can get leadership communication skills training in order to become a leader.  You can attend live seminars or workshops but these are often quite costly.  This is the way I got most of my own leadership communication skills training.  Much of the training events I attended were funded by the companies I was working at but I did spend a few thousand dollars on some seminars and workshops that were not corporately funded.
